dansaek 2024

My "Dansaek" series began as an attempt to transpose the performative repetition, natural hues, and profound textures of Korean Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) into contemporary furniture and objects. The essence of Dansaekhwa lies in the persistent, meditative process of emptying and refilling. My work involves a stage of "emptying" by carving away portions of the wood, followed by a repetitive "filling" as I pour resin into the resulting voids.

Through this meticulous process, unique textures and tonal depths are realized. Within the hexahedral form—a shape that embodies the restrained beauty of Dansaekhwa—I have captured the colors of Korea’s four seasons. By converging with the materiality of wood, these elements culminate in an assimilation with nature.
